The Department Manager will manage and be responsible for the overall performance, success, and financial health of the department. The role is responsible for addressing and mitigating all issues, conflicts and delays within the department. The Department Manager will cultivate relationships with leaders of other functional groups and departments to ensure continuity and collaboration. This position is located in Livonia, MI and is intended for INTERNAL candidates at this time. 

As a Department Manager, you will:

  • Provide leadership to all department staff, including evaluations, goal setting, and mentoring and coaching.
  • Be responsible for the execution and financial health of the department, including projections and forecasting.
  • Oversee the development of all departmental strategies and new business opportunities.
  • Negotiate contractual and financial business dealings with all potential and existing customers.
  • Be responsible for the department staff to properly manage all cross functional teams necessary to support the department.
  • Regularly present to Executive Leadership regarding program status, financial health, and backlog / pipeline of new opportunities.
  • Responsible for program and department budget, staffing, and management of headcount.
  • Responsible for interface with other department leads to ensure continuity for cross-enterprise programs.
  • Assist team with ongoing support and negotiation for active customers and programs within the department.
  • Initiate and support continuous improvement initiatives for the department.
  • Support other departments under the Vice President’s umbrella with the aforementioned tasks.
  • Ensure adherence to company policies, procedures and industry regulations.

As a Department Manager, you must have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in economics, business, finance or accounting.
  • Minimum 5 year(s) of relevant professional experience in an automotive, engineering and/or manufacturing environment.
  • U.S. citizen under International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) compliance
  • Knowledge of complex legal principles related to contracts and other binding agreements.
  • Excellent skills in negotiating, business strategy, and maintaining composure in high-stress situations
  • Expert knowledge in developing cost models.
  • Expert knowledge in quote terms and conditions.
  • Expert computer skills to include MS Office Suite, with advanced experience in Excel including extensive formulas, pivot tables, and macros.
  • Must possess excellent leadership and analytical skills, the ability to solve complex problems, be self-motivated.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, both written and verbal, and ability to multi-task by managing multiple projects/customers/tasks simultaneously.
  • Customer-focused with a focus on cost, quality, and delivery.

A successful candidate may also have:

  • Project Management Professional (PMP), Project Management Certification (PMI).
  • Basic Computer Aided Design (CAD) manipulation.
  • Basic ability to read/understand prints.
  • Experience working with Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP)/Material Requirements Planning(MRP) systems (PeopleSoft highly desirable).
  • Experience or knowledge with Lean Six Sigma or PMI fundamentals.
